Needless
to say, this was the men's banner made in the main by men and boys
with just a little help from some female participants. The upper
section has a football pitch and groups of jubilant and dejected
football supporters. Sailing in the Clyde is Sir Thomas Lipton's
yacht Shamrock in which he never quite won the Americas' Cup.
The
inner banner was designed by the well known Scottish cartoonist
Malcolm McCormick. It is a riot of supporters of all the Glasgow
football teams. Scarves of Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers are
bound together with those of Partick Thistle, Clyde and Queen's
Park. In the forefront are the two major team captains Graeme Souness
and Billy McNeill. Close examination of the supporters will reveal
one solitary West German supporter, a refugee from the World Cup
that year. In years to come this banner will never fall apart as
they are so neurotically well sewn by the male of the species.
